Monterey Peninsula College – Public Safety Training Center

Monterey Peninsula College once again came to HGHB Architects when they needed to construct a new Police and Fire Training Facility at the decommissioned Ft. Ord Army Base. A modest project budget led HGHB to explore renovation of the existing structures rather than building all new. The buildings have the distinction of being the first former military buildings approved by DSA for permanent student use. . Invoking little known enabling legislation, the design team embarked on a process commonly known as “self-certification” and ultimately obtained approval for the project by DSA. This strategy accommodated all of the District’s goals at 60% of the cost of new construction and set a new standard for sustainability.
