Converting a former children’s clothing store into a new auditorium and reading room, HGHB used visibility, transparency, and abundant light as themes for a new functional program for a Christian Science congregation. Daylighting is provided without heat gain using shading and a terra cotta brise soleil, allowing filtered, natural light to illuminate the reading room and adjacent public spaces. Stylistically, the building shed its previous reference to early California in favor of more modern Bay Area architectural traditions.
